Interesting. I don’t want to be weird, but I've never understood the national obsession with Hockney. His bright green trees etc of recent years, and honestly, for me, a lot of his past work, have always just seemed like proficient representational painting. I've never met anyone who thinks he's anything but amazing. I put it down to his being a favourite for the public from the 60s which somehow just stuck. I'd much rather see a Rothko any day.

Love your astute and thoughtful observation that abstraction and representation can utilize the same set of pictorial possibilities.
